  3. What is "Sound Over"?
  4.  
  5. Well, it's a drag-and-drop application that takes almost any file and
  6. converts the data fork into a Mac Sound resource ('snd ' type #2). I wrote
  7. this in order to convert my sound files from my Apple IIgs over to the Mac
  8. (over 40 megabytes of files). I was unable to find -ANY- other program to
  9. do this, other than Sound Mover, which has no batch ability, and doesn't
  10. really understand Apple IIgs sounds.

  12. The file is converted "in place", and is very fast. The orignal file is
  13. OVERWRITTEN, so back it up.

  15. Cool things:
  16.  
  17. (a) will strip ".snd" or " snd" from the end of the filename. "Amen.SND"
  18.     becomes "Amen"
  19. (b) understands the unoffical binary sound file type/auxtype format for
  20.     the rate (if the file is binary, the auxtype is the playback rate
  21.     times 51.04something).
  22. (c) understands the Sound Shop format (some of my sounds were in this).
  23. (d) understands Mac->Apple->Mac run-around (where the resource goes into
  24.     the data fork) and extracts the sound from this. Very nice feature!
  25. (e) very small program - less than 32k on disk, runs in 256k of memory.
  26. (f) it should work just fine if the file is on almost any drive - I
  27.     haven't tried it on a file on a IBM or ProDOS disk or over a network,
  28.     but there is no reason why it shouldn't work.
  29. (g) no specific Mac needed - it runs on both the IIsi and the SE I have
  30.     access to.
  31. (h) no money required - this is just a "neat program" that I thought others
  32.     would like to have.

  34. Bugs:
  35.  
  36. 1:The File Dropper shell does not pass the files in a directory; so if you
  37.   drag a disk or a directory folder, it will only get the first file in
  38.   that directory or disk. This is bug in the FD shell, not in SO.
  39. 2:There is almost no error checking. There -could- be problems if the file
  40.   to be dropped is already open somewhere else, or if the disk is full.
  41. 3:Apple IIgs sound resource files are not converted - I don't have a GS
  42.   any more, and never had them in this form anyways (send me mail if you
  43.   would like this in here).
  44. 4:Sound files compressed using ACE are not converted correctly - you get
  45.   mush. I never used ACE (slow and killed the quality), so there.
  46. 5:It ALWAYS replaces the passed file, unless you cancel (you have to be
  47.   VERY fast).
  48. 6:The name is strange and the icon is weird, but it works for me.
